At HCA HealthONE Rose, our volunteers are more than just helping hands — they are the heartbeat of our hospital. Among these dedicated individuals is Joann Dawe, whose story is a beautiful testament to the power of service, legacy, and community.

A family tradition of giving

Joann’s journey as a volunteer began with a deeply personal connection. Both her grandmother, Nellie Waxman, and her mother, Naomi Waxman, were proud volunteers at Rose. Nellie, remembered for her signature pink jacket, was even the original buyer for the hospital’s gift shop. Naomi, who began volunteering after retirement, was known for her work with organization and helping establish the Surgery Waiting Area Information Desk.

When Naomi passed away in 2021, Joann offered to take over her mother’s duties — while continuing the family legacy. What began as a once-a-month commitment to help with accounting duties quickly blossomed into a multifaceted role that touches nearly every corner of the hospital.

A volunteer of many hats

Joann now volunteers two days a week in different departments. The first day, she greets patients and visitors at the Main Information Desk, offering directions around the five buildings on campus, reassurance to calm nerves, and a friendly smile. The second day, she supports the Human Resources Department, assisting with everything from organizing files and helping with special events to preparing orientation packets and assisting in flu shot clinics.

Her contributions don’t stop there. Joann also lends her time to Rabbi Kaye’s office during Chanukah, helps the Volunteer Coordinator with special projects, and is always ready to step in wherever she’s needed.

Making a difference, one task at a time

Joann’s favorite part of volunteering is simple yet profound: knowing she’s helping others. “[Volunteers] provide an additional set of eyes, ears, and hands, as needed. For example, the Information Desk is the first area that many patients and visitors encounter as they come into the hospital. Feeling lost and not knowing where to go or how to get there can be overwhelming — a friendly face who can guide them helps to put people at ease.”

Along with the other Rose volunteers, Joann’s presence brings comfort and efficiency to the hospital environment. “Working in departments provides a service that allows the staff to focus on their jobs and not have to worry about making sure something gets done, something a volunteer can do.”

Her impact hasn’t gone unnoticed. She was even honored with the prestigious Frist Humanitarian Award — an unexpected but well-deserved recognition of her dedication and compassion!

An invitation to serve

To those considering volunteering, Joann offers heartfelt encouragement: “It allows you to share your talents, meet new people, and make friends. Be open to new opportunities to share your skills and expertise. Know you are making a difference — and enjoy the great feeling that comes from giving your time.”

Joann Dawe embodies the spirit of service that defines HCA HealthONE Rose. Her story is not just one of personal dedication, but of a legacy carried forward with grace and generosity. We are honored to have her as part of our volunteer family. Learn more about volunteering with HCA HealthONE Rose.
