A lifesaving gift: Son donates stem cells after father's cancer diagnosis

When Steve Howard was diagnosed with a blood cancer, his son, Jake, was the best match for a donation.

“I was diagnosed with MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome),” Steve said. “I google MDS. First thing it says is — very rare, often fatal. That was it — no more googling that!”

Steve started treatment — chemo, radiation, the works — at the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute at HCA HealthONE Presbyterian St. Luke’s in Denver. But he still needed one more thing.
